Nanchang


Capital of Jiangxi province, China, on the River Gan, about 260 km/160 mi southeast of Wuhan; population (2000) 1,680,800. In the later 20th century Nanchang became a major industrial centre with a wide range of industries including iron, machinery, especially diesel engines, motor vehicles, especially lorries and tractors, aircraft, chemicals, especially fertilizers and pharmaceuticals, textiles, paper, glass, porcelain, soap, and lumber. There is also a considerable trade in rice, beans, linen, timber, paper, and tobacco.

Nanchang is a road and rail junction, situated about 45 km/30 mi from Lake Poyang. It was originally a walled city built in the 12th century. The first Chinese communist uprising took place here on 1 August 1927.
