Industrial city in Maharashtra state, India, 710 km/440 mi east of Mumbai (formerly Bombay); population (2001 est) 2,123,000. Industries include textiles (especially cotton), metal goods, transport equipment, pharmaceuticals, and hosiery; oranges are traded. Nagpur was the centre of the Chanda
Gond dynasty in the 10th11th centuries, and was the former capital of Central Provinces and Berar, and Madhya Pradesh states. In 1956 it alternated with Mumbai as capital of Maharashtra state.
