Plant with a thick forked aromatic root used in alternative medicine as a tonic. (Panax ginseng, family Araliaceae.)

Asian ginseng Panax ginseng was placed on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Appendix 2, which controls, but does not completely ban, trade in the species. Although cultivation is widespread, the wild plant is vulnerable, particularly in Russia.
