Mâcon
Mâcon
Capital of the French département of Saône-et-Loire, on the River Saône, 72 km/45 mi north of Lyon; population (1999) 34,500. It produces wine. Mâcon dates from ancient Gaul, when it was known as Matisco. The French writer Alphonse Lamartine was born here.
