Conspicuous zodiacal constellation in the northern hemisphere near
Orion, represented as a bull. The Sun passes through Taurus from mid-May to late June. In astrology, the dates for Taurus are between about 20 April and 20 May (see
precession).
The V-shaped Hyades open
star cluster is in the bull's head, with
Aldebaran as the red eye. The
Pleiades open cluster is in the shoulder. Taurus also contains the
Crab nebula, the remnants of the supernova of
AD 1054, which is a strong radio and X-ray source and the location of one of the first
pulsars to be discovered.
