Second-largest island of the Inner
Hebrides, Argyll and Bute, Scotland; area 950 sq km/367 sq mi; population (2001) 2,700. It is mountainous, and is separated from the mainland by the
Sound of Mull and the Firth of Lorne; it lies 11 km/7 mi west of Oban. The main town is Tobermory, from which there are ferry connections to Oban; Craignure is also connected by ferry to Oban. The economy is based on fishing, forestry, tourism, and stock rearing.
