Selangor

State of the Federation of Malaysia; area 7,956 sq km/3,071 sq mi; population (2000 est) 3,947,500. The state consists mainly of a coastal plain of alluvial soils bordering the Strait of Malacca on the western side of the Malay Peninsula. Selangor is agriculturally rich, producing coconuts, palm oil, pineapples, rice, coffee, and tea, but the state has especially prospered since the rise of the rubber plantations and tin mines in the late 19th century. With coal mining in Batu Arang, a major industrial and commercial area has developed between the cities of Kuala Lumpur (part of Selangor until 1974), Petaling Jaya, and Klang.

Selangor was under British protection from 1874 and was a federated state 1895–1946. The capital was transferred to Shah Alam from Kuala Lumpur in 1973.
