Woodlouse


Crustacean of the order Isopoda. Woodlice have segmented bodies, flattened undersides, and 14 legs. The eggs are carried by the female in a pouch beneath the thorax. They often live in high densities: up to as many as 8,900 per square metre.

The hatchlings, called mancas, have only 12 legs and must moult twice before gaining their final pair of legs. Common in Britain are the genera Oniscus and Porcellio.
