Hungarian-born British conductor. He was music director at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London 196171, and director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra 196991. He was also principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra 197983. He made more than 250 recordings, including 45 operas, throughout his recording career and was honoured with 32 Grammy awards more than any other artist. He was made a KBE in 1971.
