Two waterfalls on the Niagara River, on the CanadaUSA border, between lakes Erie and Ontario and separated by Goat Island. The
American Falls are 56 m/183 ft high, 328 m/1,076 ft wide; the more spectacular
Horseshoe Falls, in Canada, are 52 m/170 ft high, 675 m/2,215 ft across.
On the west bank of the river is Niagara Falls, a city in Ontario, Canada; on the east bank is Niagara Falls, a city in New York State, USA. Their economies are based on hydroelectric generating plants, diversified industry, and tourism. The use of hydroelectric power in North America was pioneered here in 1881.
