Southernmost point of mainland England in Cornwall. The coast is broken into small bays, overlooked by two cliff lighthouses. Lizard Point is notable for Cornish heath and other plants similar to those found in southwest Europe.
The headland is formed largely of greenish serpentine rock. Goonhilly Downs nearby is the site of a satellite communications centre. The village of
Lizard lies 17 km/11 mi south of Helston. Kynance Cove lies to the northwest of Lizard Point. The Lion's Den is a chasm formed in 1847 by the collapse of a cave. A dangerous reef, known as the Stags, stretches south off the headland. Lizard Point is situated at latitude 49° 57' 30" N and longitude 5° 12' W.
