Public office created in 1351 and attached to the crown since 1399. The office of Chancellor of the Duchy is a sinecure without any responsibilities, usually held by a member of the cabinet with a special role outside that of the regular ministries; for example, Harold Lever as financial adviser to the Wilson–Callaghan governments from 1974.
