Mountain range in central Asia, length 800 km/500 mi, greatest height Tirich Mir, 7,690 m/25,239 ft, in Pakistan. The narrow Khyber Pass (53 km/33 mi long) connects Pakistan with Afghanistan and was used by Babur and other invaders of India. The present road was built by the British in the Afghan Wars (183842 and 187880).
Orange symbolizes the Sahara Desert. The orange disc represents the sun. Green recalls the country's forests. White stands for the River Niger. Effective date: 23 November 1959.
