Autonomous community and province of northern Spain; area 5,289 sq km/2,042 sq mi; population (2001 est) 537,600. From the coastline on the Bay of Biscay it rises to the Cantabrian Mountains. There is some mining (iron, zinc, and some lead) here, as well as engineering and food industries, particularly dairy products. Along the coast, chief occupations are fishing, fish-processing, and ship-building. The capital is Santander; other chief towns are Reinosa, Torrelavega, Castro Urdiales, and Santoña.

Yellow stands for grain and freedom from need. Green symbolizes the forests and hope. Red represents bloodshed and courage. Effective date: 20 March 1989. >>
