Region of southern Italy, comprising the provinces of Avellino, Benevento, Caserta, Naples, and Salerno; area 13,595 sq km/5,249 sq mi; population (1998 est) 5,792,600. The administrative capital is Naples; industrial centres include Benevento, Caserta, and Salerno. Agriculture is important; wheat, citrus fruits, wine, vegetables, tobacco, and hemp are produced. The volcano Vesuvius is near Naples, and there are ancient sites at Pompeii, Herculaneumm, and Paestum.

The bright blue field stands for the Pacific Ocean. The shield is taken from the coat of arms. Effective date: 10 October 1970. >>
