Industrial city (leather, linen, carpets, paper, and electrical goods) and capital of Croatia, on the Sava River; population (2001) 691,700. Zagreb was a Roman city (Aemona) and has a Gothic cathedral. Its university was founded in 1874. The city was damaged by bombing in October 1991 during the Croatian civil war.
The emblem was added to distinguish the flag from that of Italy. The design is based on the French tricolour. The colours are those of the Mexican liberation army. Effective date: 23 November 1968.
