Stick-and-ball game resembling hurling, popular in the Scottish Highlands. It is played between teams of 12 players each, on a field 132183 m/144200 yd long and 6491 m/7099 yd wide. A curved stick (camán) is used to propel a leather-covered cork and worsted ball into the opposing team's goal (hail). The premier tournament, the Camanachd Cup, was instituted in 1896.
Modelled on the French tricolour, the vertical stripes represent liberty and revolution. The almost square proportions of the flag are unusual. Effective date: 23 January 1831.
