Lauderdale, John Maitland, 1st Duke Of Lauderdale
Scottish politician. Formerly a zealous Covenanter, he joined the Royalists in 1647, and as high commissioner for Scotland 1667–79 persecuted the Covenanters. He was created Duke of Lauderdale in 1672, and was a member of the Cabal ministry 1667–73.
