Scottish-born writer. The early volumes of sketches of childhood,
The Golden Age (1895) and
Dream Days (1898), were followed by his masterpiece
The Wind in the Willows (1908) which became a children's classic. Begun as a bedtime story for his son, it is a charming tale of life on the river bank, with its blend of naturalistic style and fantasy, and its memorable animal characters, the practical Rat, Mole, Badger, and conceited, bombastic Toad. It was dramatized by A A Milne as
Toad of Toad Hall (1929) and by Alan Bennett (1990).
