Cape Cod

Hook-shaped peninsula in southeastern Massachusetts, USA, separated from the rest of the state by the Cape Cod Canal; length 100 km/62 mi; width 1.6–32 km/1–20 mi. Its beaches and woods make it a popular tourist area. The islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are just south of the cape.

Basque and Norse fisherfolk are believed to have visited Cape Cod many years before English Pilgrims from the Mayflower landed at Provincetown in 1620. It was named in 1602 by the English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold, after the cod which were caught in the dangerous shoals of the cape. Considerable wealth in the 19th century came from whaling and the sea. Some former seamen's houses are now museums. The Kennedy family home is at the resort of Hyannis Port.
