US film actor. He became an international cult figure through roles as a tough, romantic loner in such films as
High Sierra (1941),
The Maltese Falcon (1941),
Casablanca (1942),
To Have and Have Not (1944),
The Big Sleep (1946), and
In a Lonely Place (1950). He won an Academy Award for his role in
The African Queen (1952).
After a short stage career, Bogart spent much of the 1930s playing secondary roles to the likes of James
Cagney and George Raft. He achieved fame as a gangster in
The Petrified Forest (1936). Bogart's other films include
