Family of rulers of the Islamic empire, whose
caliphs reigned in Baghdad 7501258. They were descended from Abbas, the prophet Muhammad's uncle, and some of them, such as Harun al-Rashid and Mamun (reigned 81333), were outstanding patrons of cultural development. Later their power dwindled, and in 1258 Baghdad was burned by the Tatars.
From then until 1517 the Abbasids retained limited power as caliphs of Egypt.
