sexism in language
Many women object to having to be labelled as married or unmarried when they give their title as Mrs or Miss. Men are all Mr and do not have to reveal their marital status. Feminists proposed Ms as a female equivalent of Mr, and it is now well established as an option.

There is an increasing tendency towards dropping all titles and using a person's first name and surname in letters, public notices, and so on. If you are writing to someone such as a company's customer care officer, and you do not know the name or sex of that person, start the letter Dear Sir or Madam.
