e-envoy
UK government post created in 1999 to fulfil the prime minister Tony Blair's promise that Britain would become the best country in the world in which to carry out electronic commerce, and also to ensure that business leaders understood its importance to their businesses. The Office of the e-Envory was superseded by e-government unit within the Cabinet Office in 2004 to support the business transformation of government itself.

The first e-envoy was Alex Allen, formerly UK High Commissioner to Australia, who had worked as a computer consultant before joining the Civil Service. Allen took up the post in January 2000, responsible directly to the prime minister, but reporting on a day-to-day basis through both the e-minister and the minister for e-government. In 2004 Ian Watmore was appointed as the new head of e-government, accountable to the minister for the Cabinet Office.
