Dictionary of Computers - WELL, the
WELL, the
San Francisco-based electronic conferencing system. It was founded in 1985 by Stewart Brand, with Larry Brilliant, Matthew McClure, and Kevin Kelly (later founding editor of Wired magazine). The WELL includes among its 4,000 members a mix of leading journalists and writers and technological inventors.
The WELL featured in the 1995 arrest of hacker Kevin Mitnick, and was the site where the first few Computers, Freedom, and Privacy conferences (annual gatherings to discuss the future impact of technology) were planned. The WELL was bought in 1994 by Reebok founder Bruce Katz. In 1999, the WELL was acquired by the online magazine Salon.com.
