ADSL technology allows for rates of data transfer faster than standard modem rates. A downstream rate (rate for receiving data) of up to 9 mbps (megabytes per second) is possible, and an upstream rate (rate for sending data) of up to 1 mbps. A special ADSL modem is required to use the technology. Downstream rates of up to 24 mbps are possible with newer versions of the standard, such as ADSL2+, but these can only be achieved over short distances (as of 2006).
