Deep Blue
Name given to the IBM chess-playing computer that first defeated a human grandmaster, the Russian Garry Kasparov, in 1996. This was the first match of a six-match series that Kasparov went on to win 4–2, but in 1997 Deep Blue won a rematch series 3.5–2.5, fuelling debate about the possibilities of artificial intelligence.

The architect and principal designer of Deep Blue was Feng-Hsiung Hsu, who joined IBM in 1989. Deep Blue's award-winning precursor, Deep Thought, was developed by Hsu and other graduate students at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. In 1988 it was the first computer to achieve a grandmaster rating.
