HTML extension
Any proprietary addition to the standard specification of HTML (hypertext markup language).
Both Microsoft and Mozilla, publishers of the two leading Web browsers, have built in such extensions, which are controversial as they clash with the basic ideal that the Net should operate on open standards which allow interoperability. In general, any browser should be able to log on to any site and be able to access most of its information, but the features implemented with proprietary extensions will only display correctly with a browser that supports those extensions.
