Although commentators had believed Notes to be under threat from cheaper Internet-based solutions, in fact its popularity increased in the late 1990s, when Lotus lowered the price of Notes and released its Domino software which acts as both a Notes server and a Web server. In 1995, Lotus Development Corporation was bought by IBM, which wanted Notes, in order to compete with Microsoft's forthcoming Exchange groupware.
