network computer
Simple computer consisting essentially of a microprocessor, a RAM chip, and a monitor. NCs are designed to function as part of a network, connected to a central server via the Internet or an intranet, downloading software (especially object oriented programs) as required.

The absence of internal storage makes them much cheaper to maintain than PCs, and they are easier to manage and upgrade, as all the software is stored in one place. Some commentators had believed that the NC would eventually replace the networked PC as the standard computer set-up for business, especially for tasks previously performed using dumb terminals. In fact, the NC has rather been eclipsed by the Windows-Based Terminal.
