time-sharing
Way of enabling several users to access the same computer at the same time. The computer rapidly switches between user terminals and programs, allowing each user to work as if he or she had sole use of the system.
Time-sharing was common in the 1960s and 1970s before the spread of cheaper computers, and is now making something of a comeback, with the advent of application service providers.
