fixed-point notation
System in which numbers are represented using a set of digits with the decimal point always in its correct position. For very large and very small numbers this requires a lot of digits. In computing, the size of the numbers that can be handled in this way is limited by the capacity of the computer, and so the slower floating-point notation is often preferred.
