In World War II, ships were degaussed to prevent them from detonating magnetic mines. This involved encircling each ship with a conductor, through which an electric current was maintained.
Most monitors automatically degauss the CRT whenever they are switched on. In addition, many monitors have a manual degauss button that performs a more thorough degaussing of the CRT.
