The UK debut for live competitive league football online

UK football fans are going to be able to enjoy their first taste of live and on-demand competitive league football over the internet this weekend (Sunday, 25 April 2004) with the broadcast of Inter Milan v Lazio at www.tiscali.co.uk/intermilan/ at 14:00 BST.

Until now, the only live internet coverage of football matches available in the UK have been restricted to friendlies or UEFA Cup games and the only way for fans to keep up with live UK or foreign league action has been via online radio stations. The broadcast will be the first of a series of trial games shown on the Tiscali website and is the result of an exclusive deal with Goal.com.

The broadcast will be the first of two critical games for Internazionale, shown on the Tiscali website, that could see the club clinch a vital Champions' League spot. Along with Lazio this Sunday, the schedule includes Inter's final home match against Parma on Sunday, 9 May also at 14.00 BST. The games will be broadcast with the stirring sounds of the San Siro Stadium, or with local Italian commentary if viewers prefer.

A specially created microsite will also include full on-demand replays of previous matches this season, including Inter's crucial recent 3-2 win over Juventus. Replays of future live games will be made available two days later and additional on-demand content includes highlights from classic Inter Milan games.

The cost to watch the whole game live will be 6 euros (£4). All the highlights and some extra clips from the previous games will be free.

Richard Ayers, the internet company's Portal Director and Editor of tiscali.co.uk, says: "This announcement is obviously of massive news to Inter Milan fans and followers of Italian football in the UK but should be of interest to football fans generally. Despite previous moves we're still a long way off seeing competitive league football live over the net. However, with deals coming to an end in the UK over the next year, Tiscali is keen to explore the potential opportunities and we hope that our Inter Milan tie-up will help point the way ahead to live league football in the UK."
