LONDON (Reuters) - New Zealand-born Wasps back Riki Flutey received his first England call-up when manager Martin Johnson named his elite 32-man squad for the 2008/09 season on Tuesday.
Flutey was one of four uncapped players included in the 32-man squad alongside Leicester back-row Jordan Crane, Northampton hooker Dylan Hartley and London Irish lock Nick Kennedy.
Johnson, ushering in a new era on his first day as England manager, demoted World Cup winners Mike Tindall, Ben Kay and Joe Worsley to the Saxons squad along with David Strettle and Nick Easter, and dropped Sale fly-half Charlie Hodgson altogether.
There was a recall for Josh Lewsey, another of Johnson’s World Cup-winning team-mates from 2003, and Harry Ellis and Lewis Moody both return to the squad after injury.
Flutey, 28, played a pivotal role in Wasps’s Premiership title triumph last season and will qualify to play for England in September under the three-year residency rule.
Johnson named injured flyhalf Danny Cipriani in his 32-man Saxons squad as the Wasps player continues his recovery from the fracture dislocation of his right ankle sustained in May.
Cipriani is not expected back in action until November, having been ruled out for six months.
Squad:
Forwards: Steve Borthwick, George Chuter, Jordan Crane, Tom Croft, Dylan Hartley, James Haskell, .....continued below
Backs: Olly Barkley, Danny Care, Harry Ellis, Toby Flood, Riki Flutey, Shane Geraghty, Dan Hipkiss, Josh Lewsey, Jamie Noon, Pete Richards, Paul Sackey, James Simpson-Daniel, Mathew Tait, Tom Varndell, Jonny Wilkinson.
