A&L chairman and governance expert Higgs dies

29/04/2008 16:14

LONDON (Reuters) - Mortgage bank Alliance & Leicester said its chairman, Derek Higgs, had died suddenly on Monday.

Higgs, 64, was the architect of Britain’s corporate governance code, and became Alliance & Leicester (A&L) chairman in October 2005.

His deputy, Roy Brown, will act as chairman until a permanent successor is found, A&L said on Tuesday. It also said that Chief Executive David Bennett would return to work on May 6 after recovering from illness.

A chartered accountant who spent 24 years at investment bank Warburg, Higgs was appointed in 2002 to undertake a review of UK corporate governance in the wake of business scandals such as those surrounding energy company Enron in the United States.

This resulted in a revised Combined Code on Corporate Governance in July 2003, which included recommendations that the role of the chairman and chief executive should be separate and that chief executives should not go on to become chairmen.
