Police release footage of missing girl

23/02/2008 13:30

LONDON (Reuters) - Police have released CCTV footage of missing nine-year-old Shannon Matthews taken hours before she went missing.

The footage showed Matthews wearing distinctive pink and grey "Bratz" furry boots during a school swimming trip in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said they were greatly concerned she had not turned up four days after last being seen at the gates of West Moor Junior School.

"That concern to me couldn’t be any worse," said senior investigating officer, Detective Superintendent Andy Brennan.

"This is a nine-year-old child now who has been missing for four days. We are very concerned."

He said all avenues were being investigated, including the continued questioning of close family, friends and neighbours.

An extensive number of premises would be searched and forensic tests carried out. So far, no clothes or items belonging to Matthews had been recovered, police said.

More than 250 calls had been taken from members of the public offering information.

"We are not going to exclude any line of inquiry," Brennan added.

He said three reported sightings of Matthews in Dewsbury were continuing to be investigated.

"At this stage the only confirmed sighting that we have of Shannon is at 3:10 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon when she left .....continued below

her school," Brennan said.

"What concerns me greatly at this stage is that there have been no confirmed sightings of Shannon since she left school on Tuesday afternoon...despite our extensive searches we have found no clothing or other items that could be connected with Shannon."

He said he was surprised nothing belonging to Matthews had been found, or that she had not been located.

Police are investigating suggestions she had told friends she wanted to run away.
