"Enchanted" is number one at Christmas box office

LONDON (Reuters) - Disney’s film "Enchanted" was the box office hit in the run up to Christmas, taking 2.3 million pounds, Screen International said.

The film, which sends up its trademark fairy tales by banishing an animated princess into the real world of New York City, has now grossed a total 6.5 million pounds.

Losing its bearings was "Golden Compass", the adaptation of the Philip Pullman book, starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, which slipped from number one spot to second place.

New at three was "St Trinian’s", a remake of the 1950s tale of schoolgirl antics featuring Rupert Everett, Colin Firth and Russell Brand.

Also new at four was the animated film "Alvin and the Chipmunks", based on the 1980s cartoon series about a group of musical chipmunks.

Down three places from two to five was the animated "Bee Movie" with Jerry Seinfeld as the voice of Barry B. Benson, a college bee who doesn’t want to become a worker.

Down three to six was "Fred Claus", the story of Santa’s less saintly brother heading to the North Pole in need of cash.

New at seven was "Welcome", while dropping three places from five to eight was "Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium", about a magical toy shop.

In at 10 was "P.S. I Love You", starring Lisa Kudrow, about a young widow who discovers her late husband has left her 10 messages intended to help ease her pain and start a new life.
