Dentist knocks rat off box office peak

LONDON (Reuters) - Romantic comedy "Good Luck Chuck" has ended the month-long run of "Ratatouille" at the top of the box office.

The critically panned story of Dane Cook as a dentist trying to break a disastrous hex on his love life took 1.3 million pounds in its debut weekend, according to Screen International.

Second, up one place, was "Stardust", with Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro and Sienna Miller in a fantasy about a young man’s bid to find a fallen star.

Ratatouille, the Disney/Pixar story of a sewer rat working as a restaurant chef was down at three.

Unchanged at four was Cate Blanchett, back as the Virgin Queen in "Elizabeth: The Golden Age," while down three places at five were the Alaskan blood-suckers of "30 Days of Night."

New at six was "Lions for Lambs," Robert Redford’s look at America’s role in Iraq and Afghanistan that has so far failed to live up to box office expectations despite a cast list that includes Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep.

"Om Shanti Om," the first mainstream Bollywood film to be premiered at London’s Empire Theatre in Leicester Square, was new at seven while the blood-spattered "Saw IV" was down three places at eight.

in London, "Eastern Promises", while new at 10 was "Into the Wild," the true story of adventurer Christopher McCandless.
