WARSAW (Reuters) - Polish President Lech Kaczynski will designate Donald Tusk, the victor of last month’s parliamentary election, as prime minister this week, the chief presidential aide said on Monday.
Tusk’s centre-right Civic Platform defeated the Law and Justice party led by Kaczynski and his twin brother, Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, in the October 21 election, promising pro-business reforms and closer ties with EU partners.
The newly elected parliament meets for the first time later on Monday. Kaczynski’s cabinet is due to resign, too.
"Mr President plans to designate Donald Tusk this week," chief presidential aide Michal Kaminski told a news conference.
Polish media have been rife with speculation that Kaczynski, who has refused to congratulate Tusk and signalled his displeasure with the election result, may refuse to nominate Tusk.
This would not prevent Tusk from becoming prime minister but could delay the formation of his cabinet by several weeks.
Kaminski said the president would meet Tusk and other party leaders on Tuesday.
Once designated, Tusk will have two weeks to form his cabinet and win a vote of confidence in parliament.
He has already agreed to form a majority coalition with the smaller Peasants’ Party.
