LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Shaft" star Richard Roundtree is cruising into "Speed Racer," a live-action adaptation of the 1960s cartoon.
The Warner Bros. project, from "Matrix" creators Larry and Andy Wachowski, centres on young race car driver Speed (Emile Hirsch) and his quest for glory in his thundering, gadget-laden Mach 5. Roundtree will play Ben Burns, a racer-turned-commentator who is an icon to the fans and a hero to Speed.
The cast also includes Matthew Fox, Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon and John Goodman. Shooting is underway in Berlin.
After wrapping "Speed," Roundtree will join Vivica A. Fox in the national tour of the play "Whatever She Wants." He is best known for playing John Shaft, the title character in the 1971 movie about a "black private dick that’s a sex machine to all the chicks."
