Second-round leader Clark finished his second round early on Friday at the par-70 Colonial Country Club layout and then had to wait nearly a day to begin his third round.
American Arron Oberholser was one shot behind at 10 under par. World number three Jim Furyk was two shots behind at eight under, tied for third with Australian Nathan Green who lives in nearby Plano, Texas, and former British Open champion Ben Curtis.
German Alex Cejka was tied for sixth at six-under 132 with Kevin Na of South Korea and American first-round leader Anthony Kim, at 21 the youngest player on the PGA Tour.
