BRAZZAVILLE (Reuters) - Gregory the chimpanzee, known for asking visitors for a drag of their cigarettes and his dramatic rescue by helicopter from Congo Republic’s civil war, has died aged 62, zoo officials said on Wednesday.
With fighting raging in the capital Brazzaville in 1997, the Jane Goodall Institute, which campaigns on behalf of threatened primates, arranged for a helicopter to fly Gregory out to its Tchimpounga sanctuary along with his three young companions Banana, Zouzou and Bob.
On its website the institute describes Gregory as "a lover of music and connoisseur of fine French bread".
