Shot soldier was a new father

Shot soldier was a new father

A British soldier who shot himself in the head in Basra had just become a father, it has emerged.

Lance Corporal David Wilson was described by relatives as a family man whose life was made "complete" by the birth of his daughter Poppy 11 weeks ago.

The 27-year-old was on operations in southern Iraq when he was found injured at Basra's contingency operating base yesterday.

L/Cpl Wilson, who was serving with 9 Regiment Army Air Corps, was given medical assistance but died at the scene.

No enemy forces were involved in the incident, which happened at around 9am local time. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said there was no evidence to suggest anyone else was involved and would investigate what happened.

Described as an exemplary soldier, L/Cpl Wilson leaves his daughter, his fiancee Michelle Curry, his parents Ian and Doreen Wilson and a brother.

Paying tribute, his family said in a statement: "David was a loving and devoted family man who was the light of Michelle's life. The recent gift of their beautiful baby daughter had made his world complete.

"David wore his uniform with pride and was fulfilling his lifelong ambition to be a soldier. The family are extremely proud of him and our world will be a much sadder place without him. Words cannot express how much he was dearly loved."

Friends and colleagues have remembered a generous, kind-hearted man who lifted the spirits of those who knew him.

Staff Sergeant Tony Todd, L/Cpl Wilson's immediate boss, said: "Dave was an outstanding soldier and good friend. Nothing seemed to faze him and his sense of humour was nothing short of stage quality. He could always make others around him smile and his own smile was infectious. He will be very sorely missed."
