Tiscali Showcase - WinterKids

WinterKids played a special London Tiscali Showcase at the Soho Revue Bar London, on March 25th 2008. Watch it now.

Winterkids are a bona fide example that quirky folk driven, organ playing, indie pop is now alive. Despite their name, which comes from all members being born during those cold winter months, WinterKids music has the optimism of spring, and the sweet promise of summer. The band also believe fervently in a DIY ethos and self-promotion, and this has seen them self-finance the recording of their debut album and start their own label - Little House (using the proceeds from their first single releases and monthly Guildford club night). They also sold 1000 advance copies of their first album 'Memoirs' through their myspace page to pay their way to SXSW '07.

All this hard work has certainly paid off and they are currently riding on the success of their last single 'Wonderland' (released in October on Little House Records), which reached No 7 in the Indie charts and was playlisted on both XFM and MTV2 indie mixtape. The record is a rapturous, 3-minute love affair of male vs. female vocals, handclaps, infectious keyboard loops and whirling drums, which has helped cement their reputation as one of the hottest new bands around.

On top of this the band also recently played a sold-out show at Club NME, KoKo and toured with indie hipsters Vincent Vincent and The Villians. Furthermore they have also found time to squeeze in a triumphant tour of Japan (in September) and have just returned from a further tour in Germany following the release of the 'Wonderland' EP. Winterkids certainly aren't afraid to take things into their own hands and are keen to take an alternative and independent path for themselves, and they are now busying themselves in the studio finishing tracks and planning the campaign for the release of their debut UK album 'WinterKids' in 2008.

It is this kind of self-promotion that has driven the band from the start and after forming in 2006, WinterKids set up 'Club Go-Go' in Guildford to fund their recording costs and to start their own label - Little House. Determined to be different their first two, sold out singles were presented with a unique 'authenticity certificate', a specially produced fanzine and were carefully wrapped with ribbons and feathers, proving that the band weren't scared of going the extra -mile.

They also utilized Stussy illustrator Zara Wood to design the theatrical logo. But it wasn't just their meticulous attention to detail that got them noticed, as their debut single 'I'm Not Used To You/ Fed Up' and the follow up 'Tape It' were brilliant examples of uncomplicated new-wave pop and NME described them as 'brilliant'. 2007 continued on a high for the band as prior to SXSW, they played at a 'Live From London' showcase in New York, and as the only unsigned band alongside Tuung, Pop Levi and The Holloways were subsequently included in New York Daily News 'Top 10 British bands of 2007' alongside Amy Winehouse and Kaiser Chiefs.

To coincide with the seven dates in Austin, Texas they then digitally released there first album 'Memoirs' in the US, creating an enormous blogging frenzy in the process. The album reached the top 50 in the American College radio chart and also received a front-page plug on US iTunes. Unsurprisingly by the end of SXSW WinterKids had licensed their album Japanese label Colombia, and consequently shipped 3k units in the first month over there. Winterkids are definitely a band set for big things in 2008, whose utterly infectious blend of sounds are the very essence of DIY culture - they are James Snider (22, vocals), Tom Downer (22, Bass, Mandolin, Banjo), Bradley Osborne (23, Guitar, Lap Steel, Violin), Chris Muldoon (22, Drums) and Hannah Snider (21 Organs /vocals) - these are kids that are definitely doing it for themselves.
