Don't let the sunny melodies and cute lyrics fool you; Jim Noir is one tough cookie. His latest single, the irresistible My Patch comes with a stern warning. "If you ever step on my patch, I'll bring you down, I'll bring you down."
Think of Jim's patch as a psychedelic allotment, where musical morsels sprout from multicoloured soil. Jim, our able gardener, nurtures his seedlings with tender care, until harvest brings a bunch of delicious ditties for our delectation. In this sense, My Patch is Jim's prize-winning rose. No wonder he wants you to tread carefully.
A standout track from his outstanding Tower Of Love album (near-enough perfect, according to the nation's critics), My Patch scored a winning reception on Jim's recent UK tour, where fans nationwide bounced along to its rubbery bassline with glee. Built of ukulele pluckings, a skiffle-time drumbeat and heavenly harmonies, My Patch is, quite simply, one of the year's most inventive tracks.
As always, there's plenty more where that came from. Brand new song Holiday adorns the B-side, and finds Jim anticipating a Norwegian vacation with some excitement. "I've got a plan, I need to get a tan, I'll get in my car and go on holiday," he sings, over what can best be described as a bonkers hybrid of Herman's Hermits' I'm Into Something Good and the theme from Camberwick Green. On his vacation plans for this Summer, Jim is typically undecided: "I could take a day trip to the local laundromat to get my suit cleaned, touring takes it toll you know, and there is also a frightening bit of re-tailoring that needs doing after rocking out too much.'
Next (and finally) comes the Hot Chip remix of My Patch. The London-based techno-popsters have reinvented Jim's masterpiece, finding common ground between his acoustic creation and their own clipped and phased electronica. The result reworks the song's sole lyric to "If you step on my patch, don't bring me down," manipulating Jim's vocal to the point where it sounds like the plaintive cries of a lonely robot. Needless to say, it's top stuff.
As you're no doubt aware, Jim Noir has recently taken his show on the road, performing to delighted audiences on his sell-out debut tour, and will continue to whiz hither and thither for the foreseeable future. Notable events in Jim's diary include three appearances at South By Southwest in March and California's Coachella festival in April ("I'm looking forward to it. I hear everything is ten times bigger in America, all the cars and all that..") Back on home soil, he'll be touring with Shack throughout May, with more headline dates to follow
