Russell and Matt Hayward (Drums) have been playing and writing together since they were both kids. In September 1999 they met Emma Richardson (Vocals & Bass) at 6th form college. A songwriter in her own right, Russell and Matt conned her into playing bass, picked the name Fleeing New York from Hunter S Thompsons book, 'Songs of the Doomed' and the band was formed.
With all 3 band members contributing to the writing they soon had a suitcase of songs to take to the world. A year of gigging around Southampton venues brought them to the attention of Mark Brown and Sally Carter who in the belief they had found something special formed Stuckupmusic Limited to enable them to develop the raw energy that was Fleeing New York and take it to a wider audience.
So started the mission to convert the great un-rocked through a rash of gigs all over the UK. 20,000 people at an open-air gig on the Radio 1 stage in Portsmouth, the Logo Magazine 'Biglegup' tour finishing at Manchester's 'In the City' and some 'Club Fandango' nights made 2003 a busy year on the road.
Despite major record company interest in 2004 the band decided to record in a shed (converted studio) at the bottom of Matts garden. The subsequent tracks saw the release of a single and the mini-album, 'AOK', through there own management label, Stuckup Music.
2004 was a busy year for the band, and saw them taking their unique noise to a wider audience. With the release of 'AOK', airplay on BBC Radio 1, BBC6 radio and XFM, great press reviews in the NME, Rock Sound and Kerrang! and a university tour, the bands fanbase soared.
For 2005 the band joined forces with legendary 'Rolling Stone' rock producer Chris Kimsey and the results were quite special.
A double a-side of brand-new tracks, 'Up, Up, Up, Up' and 'At Night' hit the shops at the end of May on Stuckup Music.
With sharp bass lines, crashing guitars and the perfect boy/girl vocals, Up, Up, Up, Up is an assault of razor slicing new wave attacks, bolstered up by a moody heavy rock inclination. At Night is every bit as pleasing, driven by an effortless bass line and ringing guitar strike, it's a faultless landscape of alt. rock and sunny melodics.
To support the release, the band are currently on a nationwide headline tour, which started in Bristol on May 7th and sees them heading for new territories such as Newcastle and Glasgow, climaxing in the bands only London date promoted and presented by Clear Channel.
If that's not enough, Radio has now joined the FNY club, with airplay of UpUpUpUp on Radio 1's Huw Stephens, Rob da bank, Zane Low, 6 Musics Tom Robinson, Steve Lamacq and Vic Mcglynn, sessions for Radio 1, 6 music, Kerrang FM,Power FM and Saint Radio.
With more dates through the summer including Castle Rock festival in Cornwall, a brand new album nearly in the bag there is no let up for the rest of 2005 at the Fleeingnewyork camp.
