Release date: May 3rd 2004
Formed in 1986 by Black Francis (real name Charles Michael Kitridge Thompson IV) and Joey Santiago, the Pixies went on to become one of the most successful alternative groups of all time.
They soon grafted in bassist Kim Deal and drummer David Lovering and set about recording four vital albums. Their mix of insane, jagged punk, pop hooks and nightmarish lyrics were a breath of fresh air and they became darlings of the rock press and an influence on every young alt-rocker around (including Kurt Cobain).
Within six years they had split leaving a legacy that is hard to match. Today the legend still stands, solo careers have been successful and demands for tickets for their reunion tour in 2004 have been huge.
This retrospective features all the key tracks from the Pixies short but exciting career. The terrifying sonics of 'Bone Machine' still shatter the senses, whilst the powerful punk racket of 'Debaser' and the pure pop brilliance of 'Here Comes Your Man' remain staples of indie discos nation wide.
Elsewhere 'Monkey Gone To Heaven', 'Dig For Fire', 'Caribou', 'Wave Of Mutilation' and 'Planet Of Sound' prove just why the Pixies mean so much to so many.
'Best Of: Wave Of Mutilation' is essential for fans desperate to reminisce and even more so for anyone who missed them first time round. If they can influence one band as important as Nirvana who knows what will happen when today's teenagers get a taste of 'The Holiday Song' and 'Gigantic'.
