Madonna - American Life

The first single from Madonna's forthcoming album of the same name, 'American Life' finds the enduring pop queen reclaiming her throne.

Co-produced once more by French studio wizz Mirwais (he of last album 'Music' and Bond theme 'Die Another Day'), this single sees Madge getting back to her twisted, electronic pop best.

Whilst the wealth of remixes on offer (from Missy Elliott, Peter Rauhofer, Paul Oakenfold, Felix Da Housecat and Richard 'Humpty' Vission) should please just about every type of music fan.

  • Robbie Williams - Come Undone

Having returned to the pop fray with one of his finest songs in years, the brilliant 'Feel', off his superb comeback album ('Escapology'), Robbie Williams returns this week with hit number two from said album, 'Come Undone'.

Another typically slice of razor-witted Robbie pop, 'Come Undone' finds the man at his best, and proves that he's still way out there in a league of his own.

Whilst both formats include exclusive new tracks with the DVD adding the full unedited directors cut of the 'Come Undone' video (which TV has refused to screen).

  • Blur - Out Of Time

Following a four year hiatus, Blur return this week with the stirring new single 'Out Of Time', the first insight into the band's long awaited forth-coming album, 'Think Tank'.

Already shrouded in controversy and rumour, due to guitarist Graham Coxon's unexpected departure; 'Out Of Time' still remains a classic, if somewhat left-of-centre, return from one of the UK's finest bands.

A compassionate and strangely uplifting song, it's also joined, across all formats, by brilliant bonus tracks and extras.

  • Def Leppard

One of the UK's most enduring rock imports, Def Leppard return this week with a new single that proves they haven't lost any of their fire.

Not only is 'Long Long Way To Go' a wonderfully emotive, well-crafted ballad (in the band's fine rock tradition), but it also serves as a perfect reminder of Def Leppard's undoubted musical pedigree.

Whilst each format is a must for fans (and newcomers) with a wealth of exclusive extras and brilliant video footage.

  • Ian Mcculloch - Sliding

The first taster of Ian McCulloch's forthcoming solo effort, 'Slideling', new single 'Sliding' (confusing, we know) also happens to find the Echo & The Bunneymen frontman at his most majestic in, wow, ages! Retaining his distinctly individual style, whilst at the same time not alienating existing Bunneymen fans, this is a superb insight into what promises to be a fine album from a uniquely British singing and songwriting talent.

Both formats also add exclusive bonus tracks.

  • Jay Z - Excuse Me Miss

The second single from his brilliant 'The Blueprint 2: The Gift And The Curse' album, 'Excuse Me Miss' finds the Jigga Man Jay-Z at his absolute finest! Produced by the hugely respected Neptunes duo, with Pharrell Williams supplying some guest crooning, this is a silky-smooth, sophisticated rap flow that finds Jay-Z at his most seductive.

Whilst the bonus cuts and extras across all formats are also a must for the man's army of fans.

  • The Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are New York trio Karen O, Nick Zinner and Brian Chase. They arrived in the UK last year supporting the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and headlining some of their own key shows.

Two EPs were released on indie label Wichita - one of which ended up as the NME's number two single of the year. Potted history over, everything's already pointing towards 2003 being the trio's year, and new single 'Date With The Night' is a perfect way to kickstart world domination.

A punky, rough-a-round the edges explosion of raw power and street smart sass that's so potent you can almost smell the New York streets, this is a brilliant single, and one that serves as a perfect taster for that forthcoming album.

Both formats also add bonus tracks.

  • American Hi-fi - The Art Of Losing

Grabbing romantic failure by the privates while declaring the joys of adolescent indulgence, 'The Art Of Losing' is the latest rock'n'roll blitzkrieg from punk-poppers American Hi-Fi.

Written on the road amid a rabid touring schedule, this blazing slab of catchy metal proves that this Boston foursome is still inspired not-to-mention a little insane.

Both formats also include exclusive bonus tracks with the DVD CD adding loads of bonus video extras.

  • Goldfrapp - Train

One of the most beguiling new acts to emerge over the last few years, Goldfrapp return this week with a wonderful first taster from their long-awaited new album (their first since 2000). Representing a significant development in the band's sound, 'Train' is far more electronic and rhythmic than anything on the last album, and even sees sleazy disco influences creeping to the fore.

Whilst the brilliant remix package only adds to the dancefloor flavour of this single.

  • The Kills - Fried My Little Brains

White Stripes-esque bluesy-punk track concerned with headonism and excess.

Brash lo-fi unison vocals soar over a dirty riff delivered with panache and swagger.

A short and sweet hit in the arm for garage-rock-heads alike, and at 2 minutes long it delivers with added punchiness.

  • Brendan Benson - Metarie

Best friend of band of the moment's lead singer Jack White, Brendan Benson has been a cult figure for a while now, delivering perhaps one of the most underrated albums of last year ('Lapalco').

With this reworked single version of the album track 'Metarie', Brendan delivers some of his most heart wrenching and thought inspiring lyrics within this tale of his search for solace from unrequited love; "I'd really like to see you everyday, but I'm afraid of what my friends might say. You need a bath and your clothes are wrong. You're not my type, I can tell we wouldn't get along".

Has a more deadly brush off ever been delivered?

The CD version of 'Metarie' will also feature the previously unreleased 'Alternative to Love'. Recommended.

    Andrea Doria

Is it something in the food in Italy, or the wine, or just the air?

Because 'Bucci Bag' is another of those tearing, dancefloor bothering slabs of electro-tinted funk that the Italians seem to have a canny knack of turning out at the drop of a hat. Coming out on Fatboy Slim's excellent Southern Fried label, this single, thanks to remixes from Wally Lopez and Playgroup's Trevor Jackson, is already going down a storm with a wide range of top jocks, and is beginning to look like a potential summer hit.

    One for ALL dancefloor tastes!

  • Polyphonic Spree - Soldier Girl (Limited 12'' remix)

The Polyphonic Spree, currently putting the finishing touches to their second album at home in Dallas, release a special 12" single in April.

Side A sees Death in Vegas return the remix favour following the Spree's radical, pyschedelic interpretation of their “Scorpio Rising".

Firing a spindly, atmospheric guitar line over the top of the original and layering guitars and effects as they go, DiV twist the original joyous singalong into something far darker and more disturbing. Equal parts "Metal Box" era Public Image and "Surfer Rosa" era Pixies, these two mixes are an apposite spin on the Spree's live favourite.

Meanwhile, on the flip, rising hip hop star, RJD2, takes "Soldier Girl" into whole new dimensions.

Combining 80's synthetic horn stabs, Miami Vice like keyboards and a slamming hip hop beatz assault, the vocal and instrumental versions on the 12" will get dancefloors bouncing across the UK.

Both mixes are a worthy addition to the RJD2 remix and production canon that includes work for Cannibal Ox and Aesop Rock alongside his own, hugely acclaimed "Rain" single.
