Turin Brakes

After the whirlwind success of their first album 'The Optimist LP', released in 2001, Turin Brakes took time out in an L.A. studio to record that notoriously 'difficult second album'.

Well, by the sound of second single 'Pain Killer' (the first was last October's 'Long Distance'), that album, 'Ether Song', is going to be something very special indeed. A bitter sweet story of love and loss, 'Pain Killer' combines Turin's classic acoustic sound and content with a more up-tempo edge whilst each format includes one extra special bonus track apiece with the CD adding the wonderful new video.

  • Ones - Superstar

The Ones launched themselves into the UK's dance consciousness with their brilliant, electro-pop tinted debut single 'Flawless'; huge everywhere on it's initial release, the band had the dance world at their feet and then, seemingly disappeared from view. Well, they're back, and their latest is another catchy, funky and downright groovy slice 80's sounding house music that's heavily influenced by the untouchable cult of celebrity. Whilst Phunk Investigation, Smith & Selway and ATOC each turn up to deliver a wide range of floor friendly remixes.

  • Moloko - Familiar Feeling

It's been a long time coming, but Moloko's brand new album, 'Statues', is on the way, and, as a tasty little musical morsel to whet the appetite we have the sparkling, typically eclectic first single 'Familiar Feeling' released this week.

A bewitching, stirring and utterly compelling combination of surging strings and deep, hypnotic bass, it's another beautiful Moloko single and perfect one to introduce the new album with.

Whilst as usual, it's accompanied by another faultless remix package with Timo Maas, Max Reich and Robbie Rivera all delivering awesome versions for a whole host of dancefloors.

  • The Hiss - Triumph

A four-piece rock'n'roll band from Atlanta Georgia, The Hiss are one of the first hyped-to-the-hilt bands to emerge in 2003 as well as being the first signing to label to watch Loog Records. Already enjoying the acclaim of the NME, who recently described them as '...better than, well, everything' The Hiss, through incredible musicianship and genuinely good song writing, are already beginning to stand out from the generic rock crowd. And this debut release is a perfect example of theirtalents not-to-mention a tantalising taste of what we can expect over the coming year.

    Both formats include bonus tracks.

  • The Music - Truth Is No Words

Currently riding the crest of a rock wave across the US at the moment, The Music return this week with the latest, strictly limited release, from a debut album that's confounded critics and grabbed music fans all over the world.

A typically raucous mix of indie-rock and dancefloor dynamics, 'Truth Is No Words' is made that little bit more special because of all the extras across all three formats.

There's the outstanding, newly recorded track 'What's It For' on the CD (as well asthe 7") alongside a live track and the video whilst the DVD CD includes a whole load of video extras that'll please any fan of the band.

  • Moony - Acrobat

An irresistibly catchy follow-up to last year's debut solo offering 'Dove', the voice of DB Boulevard's huge crossover dance hit 'Point Of View' returns with another dancefloor crossover gem in the shape of new single 'Acrobats'. On pretty much the same tip as her last two outings, this is an uplifting and insanely catchy pop-dance hybrid that'll work the house floors into a frenzy whilst at the same time becoming a staple on radio playlists up and down the country. Bothformats include slightly tougher, more dancefloor friendly remixes.

  • Longwave - Everywhere you turn

Already being described as this year's successors to The Strokes (isn't everyone?) not-to-mention 'amazing' by many corners of the music press, Longwave beneath all the hype are just a great new band making some brilliant, strikingly individual sounds.

A slightly more upbeat, rockier insight into the band's forthcoming album ('The Strangest Things') than last single 'Pool Song', 'Everywhere You Turn' maybe just more fuel to the fire for the music world's media machine but for us it's just a wonderful, deeply promising vision of things to come. Both formats include bonus tracks.

  • Jakatta - One Fine Day

Dave Lee (aka Joey Negro) returns in 2003 with another fresh houser under his Jakatta moniker. Featuring the mesmerising vocals of Beth Hirsch (also the voice of Air's seminal 'All I Need'), 'One Fine Day' is a slightly more laidback, lusher offering that may be mellower but never loses sight of the dancefloor. Whist John Ciafone and Cicada's remixes inject a slightly beefier, more up-for-it slant to proceedings. Another excellent release!

  • Chicane - Love On The Run

Having re-ignited interested in his distinctive uplifting, pop-tinted trance sound with last month's re-release (and remix) of 1999's classic 'Saltwater', Chicane (aka writer/producer/musician Nick Bracegirdle) returns with his first 'real' new material since the Bryan Adam's sung 'Don't Give Up' way back in 2000. Another euphoric slab of pumping, uplifting trance, 'Love On The Run' is already destined maximum dancefloor exposure whilst Blank & Jones'and Rob Searle's contrasting remixes guarantee that it'll have lags to last all the way through to Ibiza season in the early Summer.

  • Mull Historical Society - Final Arrears

Mull Historical Society (aka singer/songwriter Colin Mac Intyre) returns with an absolute beauty in the shape of this first offering from the forthcoming album 'Us'. Though it's not instantly recognisable as a typical Mull single, The Final Arrears' marks an obvious musical progression.

Lusher, rounder and altogether more accomplished, it's a beautiful new track and only points at what we've got to look forward to with the new album.

All formats also include exclusive new bonus tracks.

  • Rain Band - Easy Rider

Young Mancunians The Rain Band may sound like they're merely revisiting the city's baggy past, but the thing is, they do it so well! A superb follow-up to that oh so promising debut single, 'The World Is Ours', 'Easy Rider' is a tight, brilliantly performed set of songs that only serves to highlight exactly how promising this young band is. Let's hope the album's not too far off!

  • Terri Walker - Guess You Didn't Love Me

Already being touted as one of the brightest young soul talents to emerge on the scene this year, new Def Soul UK signing Terri Walker finally gets a real chance to let everyone know what the fuss is about with this brilliant new single, 'Guess You Didn't Love Me'. An original and contemporary groove that fits perfectly around Ms Walker's smoky yet soulful vocals, it's a striking single, and one that heralds the arrival of a genuine and incredibly versatile new UK talent. Both formats include the mix with Mos Def alongside dancier remixes, whilst the CD adds the video.
